I Am The Truth Teller: Paintings by William Brun

Thursday, April 4
8-11pm

Work on view through May 16

Brun's body of work spans six decades. A Los Angeles native, Brun attended Chouinard Art Institute (now CalArts) from 1957-1960, a critical era turning out key figures who transformed the West Coast art scene. Though he has painted daily, his work has rarely been shown. "I Am The Truth Teller" is a selection of portraits and compositions of mythological character from among his massive oeuvre. The William Collins cocktail will be featured along with a special viewing aid for the work.

A Basic Measure

A Basic Measure speaks to the basic measure of dignity, security and resolve to care for the vulnerable among us as referenced in our president’s recent inaugural address. This exhibition is both a show residing along the basic utilitarian space of the headquarters’ hallway and an exhibition that commemorates the honorable work done by the members of SEIU ULTCW. This past election held much at stake for the collective voice of the union. But the union’s voice held through, helping to pass legislation and elect a leader whose recognition of collective action and care speaks to the SEIU ULTCW’s core values. Works included in this exhibition demonstrate the cause of collectivity and reflection on personal responsibility in caring for all.

Works by William Brun, Sophia Gasparian, Samuel Levi-Jones and Oscar Magallanes offer a reflection of the union itself through portraits of everyday workers, icons, allegorical figures and by furnishing a familiar context. These figurative works are interspersed with works by Susan Higo—literal reflections from members and the audience’s experience as displayed in the works’ mirrors—and Andrea Dominguez—reflections as words from the members’ own voices.

This collection of works is representative of the variety of forms we take and collective action required to impart a basic measure of dignity and care for each other.
